From the Alamo Drfat House: "We've joined forces with Ines Markeljovic, a dance teacher and founder of ThrillTheWorld.com, to help her complete her task of setting a Guiness World Record for having the most people around the world doing the Thriller dance at the exact same time. For the past seven months, we've been hosting Michael Jackson Sing-Alongs at the Alamo Ritz, then following the music video orgy with two hours of dance instruction that gets everyone in the crowd up to speed on how to do the Thriller dance themselves. We've partnered with local theater groups, dance companies, and schools as well, and we're convinced that when it comes time to participate in the Thrill the World dance, on Saturday, October 25th, we'll have more people in one place than anywhere else on the globe!"

HOW WE BUILD COMMUNITY - SOLIDARITY NOT CHARITY

We started this project in 2006 to raise money and material support for small, local grassroots community groups and projects that traditionally have difficulty with funding. Our main financial and material beneficiary is the Inside Books Project, which sends 18,000 free books a year to Texas prisoners. If you are a group that meets these criteria and would like financial, material or promotional support from us or to use the space for events, contact us. As a collective, we also believe that the struggles for social justice are not separate, but in fact all linked together in a broader struggle for liberation - an injustice against one is an injustice against all. By networking and supporting diverse groups and people, regardless of race, nationality, gender, sexuality, we all become stronger. TEXT and OBJECT is a new line of apparel and the first offering from the recently formed GAT5 textiles. The shirts feature simple, academically inspired designs printed on American Apparel garments.

GAT5 textiles is a part of the collaborative East Austin, TX art organization GAT5 industries. Later this fall GAT5 textiles will release a more extensive line named Negative Nancy. This line will feature a wide range of apparel and accessories including shirts, tanks, hoodies, bags, cases, posters and stickers

GAT5 is an East Austin based art organization created by Charles Ferraro in 2003. Since it’s inception GAT5 has organized and promoted a wide range of events showcasing a diverse group of artists in Austin and New York. In 2008 GAT5 textiles was introduced. Textiles creates affordable, wearable art including two lines of t-shirts: Negative Nancy + TEXT and OBJECT.

I would like to expand my store's portfolio and would like to find some models (male and female) to have my own photo shoots. I will pay with product and we can share the copyrights with the photographer. If interested come by the store to fill out an application and have a quick picture snapped. I want to stress that I look more for strong features and interesting physical qualities than the standard "model". So if you think your eyes or lips are rockin'--bring them to me and let me see them!

Over the past year I have been asked several times if I knew someone who would be interested in modeling in a fashion show at last minute. I decided that I would like to be able to network interested parties. Let me forwarn you----most do not pay, but they are great for the experience, and the sheer pleasure of the experience. Most of these events are 21 years and older and I have had many requests for Latino and Ethnic male and female models. If interested in this type of work email me a pic and bio that I can email out on request.

It is almost Halloween season!!!! I am organizing some promotional events all through out October. If you are interested in anything that has to do with Zombies---come see me ASAP!

I try to keep prices affordable!! I really go out of my way to do so, but unfortunately I will need to raise my prices this month. My suppliers have raised their prices and I am getting hit HARD by shipping. Sorry everyone! I have made the scrubs and lotions a smaller serving 5oz instead of 6oz and increased the price slightly. We figure that it is easier to get one less limb application in a container than it is to part with an extra couple of dollars.

Lotions have become a popular item at the store. Once you have a fresh made lotion it is hard to use anything else! I did not expect the lotions to be such a big part of the sales at the store and feel I need to explain a few things. First of all, making lotion is difficult. The batches vary in color, scent and consistency, depending on the temperature, humidity and source of ingredients. I always expect some type of variant and I am patient if a batch doesn’t come out perfect every time. I figure if it still works—it works, for me personally anyway. I ask that you understand that making lotion really wasn’t in the plan, at least not as much as I am currently making. When I first started I only made one fresh batch on Thursdays, but very quickly I was getting orders for the other formulas so now I have most formulas available all the time depending on which ingredients are in stock. Second, I switched packaging to one size. The new containers are recyclable, and they do not leak and best of all they are sealed which has made manufacturing them so much better. I also like the fact that they are food containers, because I usually compare my product to produce in regards to the fact that they won’t stay fresh forever and for you to use them and seeing them in the food container helps you remember that. It was too difficult for me to keep up with making 3 different sizes and seemed that people tended to want the one size I didn’t have in stock. So now I offer one size only—it is 6oz, which is right in the middle of the small and medium sizes that I offered before. The lotion is also priced in the middle at $7.50 each. This price is technically considered a wholesale price. I try to keep the prices down for you as much as I can. I understand that the new packaging isn’t what you are accustomed to, but I would need to raise the prices by over $2 each to keep making them in the small, medium, large jars like I did before. You see, I bought the jars years ago on clearance and to reorder them now it is simply just too much. If you want a fancier container you can buy your own and repackage when you get home. Last point I need to discuss is the ingredient coconut oil, I use organic virgin coconut oil for many of the lotions. It is a light oil that is loaded with nutrients for the skin. When it is cold (less than 72 degrees Fahrenheit) is solidifies and looks like lard. When it warms it is clear liquid oil that pores like water. If you are storing your lotion in a cool place it will get hard. There is nothing wrong with it, it is perfectly good, just keep it in a warm room to have a softer consistency. On the opposite end of this topic, if the lotion becomes too warm it will melt and separate. If separation occurs, stir it a bit and it should be fine. Once again nothing is wrong with it and it will still moisturize your skin. I hope everybody enjoys the fresh made lotion and understands that this has natural charm and will vary from batch to batch. Normally the lotion will stay fresh for about 3 months, but I cannot guarantee this because I do not know what type of environment you are taking it to. So please use common sense and notice if the lotion starts to smell rancid or if it starts to discolor, I advise you not to use it. Makeup Artist Apprentice Program (MAAP)

I have created MAAP to fulfill a need. Inspiring makeup artists have few options to learn the trade. Most schools are located either on the west or east coast, and it is very difficult and expensive to pursue this as a career. Most inspiring makeup artists enroll in cosmetology school and quickly become frustrated at the lack of education and training that is offered. It becomes increasingly more difficult once one is in the work force to establish themselves as an accomplished makeup artist. I discovered that I had the opportunity to offer something to these creative individuals. I have a location, space, experience, and plenty of makeup to offer. Then I thought about what was in it for me and my company. I personally love the high energy involved in a fashion show, or the professionalism that surrounds a photo shoot, that's why I like to do makeup. I love to create dramatic effects, it inspires and satisfies me. I like knowing that a large scale production could pick up the phone and call me and I could have an entire crew there to meet their needs. I like thinking that an inspiring model, makeup artist, designer and photographer could work together without exchanging money to build their individual portfolios. I have the space and the determination to make things happen. Do you? I am offering a free 6 week training program for serious inspiring makeup artists. I'll provide the training and in return I ask for your time. Open call is 7/30 & 7/31 from 10am- 8pm at the store. No experience needed.
